Title: Getting a new PC for xmas...
Post by: Gilly on November 15, 2008, 07:44:53 AM
So I'm getting a new computer.
I'd like to know if this is a good deal for the price & how i should expect the performance to be.

Current PC Specs:
- 2GB of RAM
- Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz
- ATI Radeon 9600 (256MB)
- 80GB + 40GB hard drives
- Windows XP Professional / Windows 7

New PC Specs:
- 3GB of RAM
- AMD Athlon Dual-Core 2.5GHz
- nVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE (128MB)
- 320GB hard drive
- Windows Vista Home Premium SP1

Now this new PC has a price tag of $400.
What I wanna know is should I expect to see better performance
on Windows Vista & in general? How's the processor?

Also, could someone tell me if my current graphic card could
be placed in this computer 'cause I know the graphic card
it comes with is not good, but is ATI Radeon 9600 better?

Yeah I think that PC sounds very good. You will have plenty of storage, I have a 500GB External and find it hard to fill it up. Even a 160GB can be a little difficult for me but we all have our uses. :)

3GB RAM is very spacious and together with that AMD dual core, you should run Windows Vista no problem on it. I am not sure about the graphics cards though. All I know is that my desktop is on XP and has onboard graphics, so I dunno what it would be like on Vista although I would imagine a seperate graphics card would provide better performance.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

NVIDIA is better than Radeon because NVIDIA is like high-res.
And it has awesome graphics.

sounds like your old graphics card (the ATI) is better than your new one, but thats just me... (im just 11 so eh, idk about computers that much, all i know is that mine needs more RAM, but the last time i tried that i got the blue screen of death...) i'd say to look both the graphics cards up and see which one you think is better.

NVidia is a lot better than ATI, you get better performance out of it

My desktop needs a dual core processor, but I don't think the motherboard will support it. :( I don't have a clue about installing processors either. :P

Although it is a good deal the graphics card isn't very good and the processor could be better...
But thats for running games with. It will run Vista fine.

Vista is a system hog. Its takes up too much resources. You need at least 2GB of RAM to run it smoothly.

I think Vista is quite good, it removed LOTS of bugs and errors from the XP-version. In the XP version I nearly got blue error screens daily, but when I got Vista on the same computer I didn't get blue error-screens anymore  ;D
