It was confirmed by Nintendo this week that a system "firmwear" update has been released to help combat modified Wii consoles from playing pirated games, but this update is also causing problems for many Wii owners. Consumers say that after downloading Wii System Update 4.2, SOME (NOT ALL) have experienced Wii's freezing in the middle of games and even saying "DISK READ ERROR" when a game is loaded into the console.
Nintendo has realeased a statement saying that if anyone is experiencing these kind of problems after downloading Wii System Update 4.2 and has an UN-MODIFIED CONSOLE you can contact Nintendo and they may tell you that you could send your Wii to them and they will fix it for free. (Although, a repair for a Wii can take a few weeks or so...I sent my Wii away in November of 2008 and Nintendo was able to fix my console but I lost all my game memory, but consider the fact that it's better to have a fixed Wii over a broken one!)
In my opinion, I say...if you want to update your console and you are unsure of System Update 4.2, wait a few weeks and the problem should be resolved. (This is coming from a Wii owner who just got connected to WiFi not too long ago) ;)

I knew of this before,but I'm luckily I found out or else I would have updated and then who knows.

Lucky, I didn't upgrade yet...this warning is just something you should keep in the back of your head just in case your Wii goes on the firtz.

its been going on the fritz at random times b4 the update(game freezes,disc read error) so I'm not too worried
No problems for me.
I upgraded my wii to system ver. 4.2 and it got rid of my homebrew channel.

I didnt even get a message about v4.2
I can look back and find v4.1... but not v4.2 (I was just on my wii, playing SSBB)

o-o;; I updated late last week. I haven't had any problems, though the Wii has only been used for Wii Fit, Nintendo Channel and Wii Shop Channel since.

I'm gonna tell you the long story though.
Kay so like, I had a hacked Wii On 4.0 (holy shit I'm good.)
So I went to go buy something off of the shop channel, Saw there was an update, I was all like "HOLY SHIT UPDATE COOOOOOOOOOOL"
So yeah, Update + Hacked Wii = bullshit.
Everything started to freeze, So I was like okay?
Formated my wii, Lost everthing, still freezes.
