I'd say Tails as he's been in the sonic games more and he was sonic's first friend ;D.

Well, they are good at different things...
But Tails has better temper than Knuckles, so I'd say Tails.
Yeah, other reasons for me would be:
Lol yeah, he CAN fly,
He's very smart,
He can tell the difference between a chaos emerald and a master emerald shard,
He has two tails
=> Halo on an angelic furry 0:3
Tails. Is Knuckles considered a sidekick? :-\
Hoo boy, tough choice.
Tails:
Super genius who gives Sonic all the equipment he could ever need.
Ability to fly and carry Sonic to places he can't get to.
Decent fighter, but not enough to count on him in a brawl.
Knuckles:
Awesome fighter, strong enough to hold his own against Sonic or Shadow.
Is able to translate ancient echidna writing, giving them a doorway to the past.
Makes dumb mistakes, but makes up for it later.
...hmmm. I'll go with the lovable knucklehead.
I never really considered Knuckles a "side kick." A supporting character yes, but not a side kick.
So I'm gonna say Tails.

Anyways I pick Tails for always being there for Sonic.

Knuckles is NOT Sonics Sidekick. That only was in Heroes.

Tail's voice sounds kinda like my voice like 10 years ago. (I heard myself on a audio cassette I recorded 10 years ago). :D
Tails, he was the next character created in the Sonic franchise for the 2nd Sonic game.
It meant to show SONIC's SIDEKICK Tails in multiplayer action. ;D

200 IQ
Calm like a bomb
Can help Sonic when he's in trouble(Sonic Adventure 2, Prison Lane)
Can hold off Eggman, someone that actually had more IQ
Knuckles has more brawn, and his ancient echidna knowledge has bailed the team out. Besides, Knux has more overall abilities.

But Sonic wouldn't have made it to Sonic Adventure to befriend Knuckles without Tails.

Yes but before that hes trying to kick sonic in cause he gets tricked by eggman far to much, i'd say knuckles is back up and tails side kick

because he helped me A LOT in sonic 3
I like Knuckles better as a character, but as a side kick I think Tails better fits the description. It has nothing to do with the degree of which I like a character.
