I know how you feel... People gave me a hard time about Arrow being a recolor, which he ISNT... he WOULD be if I gave him the same age, overall appearance, attitude, etc, as Sonic

Ok, he's a hedgehog, he's fast, and he (optionally) has a guitar like Sonic's in SU... so? His guitar I don't use, his speed who cares? People Don't say Sonic is copying any other super hero for using Super Speed! Hedgehog? Lets see... Shadow's a hedgehog, Silver's a hedgehog, Amy's a hedgehog... just because my character is a hedgehog, means nothing! And he has an edit, he has the red stripes on his head, and his head ONLY, unlike a lot of FCs... He's young, too, 11, and not 15, 16, 17, etc... which is the age people usually make their characters. Theres more but I just realized I've been babbling on about nothing.
Yes, a few modifications could be useful... but try not to let it get to you right now.

I got shit about Equinox being a recolor when I first made him.
Which technically, I took a picture of Sonic, made him a lighter blue, and threw chest hair, green stripes, and Tail's bangs on him. pffft
There's a mile-wide line between a recolor and a fan character.
Recolor is something like this;
spike the hedgehog,
he's a black sonic, just as fast, he's 15 years old, doesn't need the chaos emeralds to go super, amy is head over heels in love with him, etc etc.
even when I couldn't draw, and I recolored sonic pictures, my character's CONCEPTS were different.
I actually had equi before I decided to rewrite his bio and make him a twin with solstice. even though his bio was cliche, it wasn't like he was the fastest thing alive, the ultimate lifeform above shadow, etc. If I can remember, he was a freedom fighter who had earth elemental powers. he wasn't fast, but he was very strong, but not invincible. he was NOT a ladies man at all, although he liked amy, etc.
Cliche? Yes. Recolor-like? Not really but it was very noobish. I was like 9 at the time, cut some slack >:C
See there, though? The mile wide difference.
Just don't let that rapier guy get to you. =\
Characters are always changing and getting better. I've had some of mine that were recolors of the original Amy sprites. they're like 12 years old, and I'm still changing them around.

There was a topic of when i still had Jeexx's first form which was more of a recolor than the second version, but the third one is the most least of a recolor (the one in my sig.).
