Title: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors *Topic will contain spoilers*
Post by: Proto_Blaze on August 08, 2011, 03:56:10 AM
What are your views on this? Honestly this is the best story in a game I have ever experienced. Truly flawless and gripping. I lost so much sleep on this game. I won't post any spoilers until the ball gets rolling but here is the gist of the game

"Nine people have been abducted by a mysterious kidnapper who calls themself "Zero." They find themselves on a ship— possibly a replica of the RMS Titanic— and are told that they have nine hours to escape before the ship sinks beneath the waves. Zero is running the "Nonary Game" - a game "where you will put your life on the line." The group is forced to split up into various subgroups and explore "numbered doors," behind which lie Zero's puzzles. Zero promises that escape lies behind a door numbered [9]. The characters must work together despite suspicions of each other to advance, as well as to discover Zero's motive and identity."

I wholeheartedly agree. Definitely the best story I have ever read in any game. The way it uses the DS's two screens not only in the gameplay but in the story is just mind blowing. I hope we aren't the only two people on these forums who share an interest in this game, as it is an underrated classic that everyone should play.

This game is like a visual novel, but with escape-the-room puzzles in between. If you're not a fan of those kinds of puzzles, neither was I until I played this game. The way they incorporate the puzzles into the story is just genius. Not only that, but there are multiple choices that you can make in this game that determine which of the many endings you'll get. A lot of games throw in alternate endings to add replay value, but this game actually has a good reason for it because they work it into the amazing story. You actually have to get a certain "dead end" ending before you can get the true one. Even in the other endings you always learn something new about the characters and their backstory and they all work themselves into the plot in a way that really feels real. The music sucks you into the moment, whether it be sad or just downright creepy. 80% of this game is reading text however, but none of it is boring because the game always keeps you sucked in because you want to find out more about the story. The story is very mature (it earns it's M rating), but it never feels silly. For a game that's mostly text, the universal acclaim it has received certainly says a lot about it's story.

Better than Phoenix Wright, Final Fantasy, or whatever other games that claim to have a good story. Hell, it's even better than most books. You owe it to yourself to play this game. I don't care how you do it, just play it.

I saw this game in GameStop not too long ago.
I'm not really a puzzle game kind of person, so of course, I didn't bother playing it.

But, I'm always open to new things, and if everyone says it's as good as it is, I'll put that fact aside to try it.  I'm always up for games with good/mature storylines (brownie points if it's a dark storyline, which this seems to be).
And it's "visual novel-esque" which is a +1 for me.  I love visual novel games.
Same with the "alternate ending" thing.  That's another turn on for me.

Whelp.
Time to drag out the good ol' r4 from the graveyard.
I'll definitely be trying this game out soon.  :3

Just like you, this game got me into visual novels as well. The first ending I got was the sub ending... and by the time I got to the true ending I was like "omg they did not.. omg they did. woah.... dont do it!!! choke that b***... etc"

I actually went to gamestop the other day to buy 2 new copies... one to circulate among my close friends.. the other to remain sealed and unopened

And if you want to try it... the official site has a demo http://www.aksysgames.com/999/pages/demo (you play in the browser)... Also it is an alternate intro to the game

And yet it is. Take it from me, someone who rarely praises games.

It has an 82 out of 100 on Metacritic, and for a game that's only 20% gameplay and the rest reading, that's pretty damn good.

I think what's keeping me from checking this is, as you say it's practically a visual novel,If it was just that I'd totally check it out, but where there is gameplay, you say it's puzzles
I hate puzzles very much, I even deprive myself from portal cause it's a puzzle game
And don't tell me "the puzzles aren't that hard", cause it's not the difficulty that I hate

While the puzzles are good, the reason the game is praised is for it's amazing story. While I can't recommend the game for you if you hate puzzles that much, you really are missing an amazing experience. I wouldn't recommend you tough it through the puzzles or even look at a walkthrough for them because figuring things out on your own is really important in this game and the puzzles weave themselves in with the plot. If you want you can try the demo (http://www.aksysgames.com/999/pages/demo) and see if you can find some enjoyment out of it, but if not then you might as well pass. I don't think you should read up on the game yourself because you might accidentally read some spoilers (avoid YouTube videos and forum posts of this game like the plague until you finish it).

Let's put it this way.

The person who wrote and designed 999 is Kotaro Uchikoshi, the same person who wrote Ever 17: The Out of Infinity, one of the most acclaimed visual novels of all time.

So yes, it is as good as Higurashi, if not better.

I feel like I'll never be able to truly replay this game, because even if I do it will never have the same impact on me as it did on my first playthrough.

Still, I might replay it a second time just to go back through the story with the knowledge on how the game ends to appreciate it more. See how many neat tidbits I missed on my first playthrough.

O gawd where do I start. Perhaps with the so called "flawless story" you brag about
Strap yourselves in cause it's about to rain cold hard spoilers up in this bitch

First of all strike 1 was that it was a survival story. I've never liked or appreciated these types of stories in the past and as I played through my mind was never changed.
Strike 2 was the inclusion of this time fiasco. I found the story to be as uninteresting as it was, but when we found out that the point of the game was to prevent Akane from being burnt alive in the incinerator by contacting her in the past, I just facepalmed the whole way through. And yes I am no fan of time traveling storylines, they always leave me with questions that are never answered and prevent me from enjoying what's going on.
Strike 3 was just that, Akane burning in the incinerator. Call me a pussy if you will, but I cringe whenever I even hear news of children being murdered in a cruel/brutal manner, and knowing of child Akane being burnt alive made my stomach churn for the rest of the game, it was almost unplayable.

Another thing I hated was that this story was accompanied by an eerie soundtrack that fitted the game perfectly. To fully explain this I'd have to get into why I dislike survival stories, which I'd rather not.

Another thing I hated were how the endings were done
The first few times I played it I got the knife ending, the safe ending, then the true ending. I have seen my brother play a game with endings stationed the same way in the past, but to claim my suspicions I played through one more time and got the submarine ending.
From that I could guess this game has:
1 true ending
1 wtf ending
the rest were bad endings
This annoyed me, from how the true ending ended, it would be impossible to have "good endings" that made sense, and realizing this only fueled how annoyed I was at game. Even more so that each ending will have Akemi (who was my fav character) inevitably die or dissapear, and in the true ending, we never find out where adult Akemi dissapears to. Therefore all the endings left bitter feelings in my gut.
Throw in all the f*cking puzzles I had to suffer to get these bitter endings and you have one... very unpleasant... gaming session.

So I'm sure you're all saying I'm posting shennanigans, nd that if I hated it so much, why didn't I make like IGN and quit after the first ending I got.
Why indeed, and the answer is simple really
The characters were
(http://cbrownley.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/thumbs-up.jpg)

Seriously, the characters were amazing, normally a cast of this stature is normally consisting of 2-3 characters who just piss me off, 1 character who I actually like, and the rest are just as bland and predictable as Sonic Colours' plot.
But not these guys, I loved everyone. I loved how they could nonchalantly crack bad puns when they only had 9 hours to live, I love the believable reactions they had whenever something did or did not go their way, and I could really go on and on about why I love this cast. Even the guys who I hated like Lotus and Clover held a very special place in my heart. I was glad when they were glad, I was shocked when they got shocked, and I actually felt something when somebody died or was dying.
The only other cast of characters that I got this attached to are in Clannad, and for that I must give credit where credit is due.
I would suffer the f*cking puzzles 100 times over just to see the interesting dialogue these guys exchange, but I won't, since I exhausted the endings already...

But even as good a cast as it was, there were too many things going against to make me say anything other than "I hated it."

First of all strike 1 was that it was a survival story. I've never liked or appreciated these types of stories in the past and as I played through my mind was never changed.

So basically this is just about your preference, or lack thereof. If you read the summary in the OP you would have known it was a survival game so you knew what you were getting into.

But Akane never did die in the incinerator. She survived as a child my contacting future-Junpei through the morphogenetic field. But the only way this could be possible was if Junpei was in the same position that she was in. That's the whole reason she set up the Nonary Game, to make it possible for her to have been able to contact Junpei thus saving her own life.

Also you're a wuss.

And as for the true ending, Junpei spends the rest of his life unsuccessfully searching for Akane. The End.

Now what I don't understand is how the only reason you played this game is because it was written by the same dude who wrote Ever17, while that game was also a horror-survival story with time-travel themes.

No, I tried it out because of 2 things:
1. You were praising it, you never praise anything ever, I figured it must be worth something.
2. You claimed it was better than Higurashi no Naku koro ni
Quote from: Elija2 on August 09, 2011, 06:49:17 PM
Let's put it this way.

The person who wrote and designed 999 is Kotaro Uchikoshi, the same person who wrote Ever 17: The Out of Infinity, one of the most acclaimed visual novels of all time.

So yes, it is as good as Higurashi, if not better.

What would be the point of more "good" endings if they would all be rendered null due to the true ending? Isn't it more satisfying with less good endings, that way when you finally get the true ending you are happy that you were able to save everyone.

Plus, in case you didn't realize this, Akane would never die anyway. You aren't playing as Junpei, you are playing as young Akane controlling Junpei through the morphogenetic field. You should have realized this during the true ending when Junpei communicates with Akane through the morphogenetic field as Junpei's text is on the top screen and Akane's text is on the bottom screen. This is made even more obvious when you have to flip your DS upside down during the final puzzle, as it shows that it is finally Junpei himself who is solving the puzzle himself and transmitting the answer to Akane. That's why you were forced to get the safe ending before the true ending, because Akane needed information that could only be found in the safe ending to help get Junpei to the true ending. Whenever you are nearing a bad ending, Akane seemingly comes down with a fever because she is nearing an ending where she shouldn't exist. But she doesn't die, she just uses the morphogenetic field to try and send Junpei down another path. Akane never dies. Nobody ever really dies except in the true ending.

Quote from: windlessusher on August 14, 2011, 05:41:52 PM
And maybe it wouldn't matter to me either if the true ending didn't also leave me with a bitter feeling

All of the good characters survive and Junpei reminisces his time with Akane, what a terrible ending.
You're just grumpy because it didn't end with Junpei marrying Akane and they all living happily ever after. The ending is still great and closes any possible plot hole.

Now that you mention, I think the only reason I didn't like the true ending was cause they didn't reveal where Akane and Aoi were after they escaped
Which, looking at it now, seems like a stupid reason to not like the game, all we need to know is that they're alive somewhere and that should be good enough for everyone

Well, you should at least get every ending. Some things are only revealed in certain endings that help flesh out certain characters, but since you've already beaten the game it might not have the same effect.

Heck, it's worth replaying the game just for the alternate conversations, like the infamous elevator scene or the ladder jokes. It really shows how great the writing in this game is.

Well, seeing how much of a total perv Akane was I kinda figured being alone in an elevator with Junpei wasn't her fear, if anything she would've made sure no one was looking and shove him in there, so I never chose that option. However it is kinda nice to see Junpei being the bigger perv for once. And there was also the scene when Junpei kept asking her to say "It's getting hard..." till he was satisfied XD

As for the ladder...lawl
Water is rising and he has only a few minutes b4 he drowns and he can still make bad jokes about a frickin ladder...

I guess I have to honour that request.

So, what would've happened if Junpei sucked at sudoku?

The power of love would have helped him through.

Plus it was an easy sudoku puzzle anyway. I'm surprised 12-year-old-Akane couldn't have figured it out herself.

This isn't one of those generic frufru anime plots, I don't think "the power of love" would've done anything... I mean, as far as we know, they don't even end up together...

And hey man, even the simplest of puzzles can seem like rocket science if you only have... I think it was 60 seconds to solve it or else you burn alive...

Even so, I don't think Junpei would give up so easily when someone's life is on the line, let alone his childhood friend.

I'm sure it was longer than that, heck 60 seconds probably passed between Junpei finishing the puzzle and them opening the final door.

I'm not saying he would give up, but it still wouldn't suddenly make him a sudoku master, that is if he sucked at it in the first place, which he didn't apparently.

Y'know what'd be funny?
Junpei finally arrives to his apartment to take a long, well deserved nap, where waiting for him was Akane sitting on his bed wearing his white button shirt, cause apparently every man must own a white button shirt...
Akane:Jumpy, for saving my life I will let you be my first
Junpei: =D
Akane:To try my cooking 8D
Junpei: =l
Akane:It'll be ready in 5 minutes
Junpei: Oh, um, that's gonna be a problem...
Akane:Why Ju-
Clover:So this is your room huh? Looks better than I...

~silence~

Junpei:Y'know, in my defense, I thought I was never gonna see you again...

Speaking of which, what's up with all the JunpeixClover supporters I've seen over the Internet?

I have never seen this before. I remember both Junpei and Santa making perverted jokes towards Clover (both involving her short skirt), but they could hardly be considered a great match. I guess since Junpei and Akane never hook up, he has to be paired up with someone.

It wouldn't bother me if Clover didn't look like child
Sure she's at least 18(She better be since they made her drive the van) but still...

And I read on the answers page that SevenxLotus is apparently canon...
Although I definately expected it when Seven constantly exclaims "I can't get along with her >.>"

"For a moment, he forgot to breathe.

He felt his heart collapse like an empty cigarette carton, and time froze.

He knew that instant that he would take the image before him to the grave.

What was left of the body sat in a sea of blood.

Chunks of flesh, torn from the body, sat in the blood like tiny islands in a great, red sea.

A vast, ragged hole had been torn in the torso, and what remained of his intestines spilled out of it like fresh spaghetti.

Smaller chunks of meat had splattered against the wall, and become stuck there as they dried.

Globules of yellowish fat had left trails like tiny slugs as gravity pulled them down the wall, even as they dried to it"

Descriptive, eh?

If someone had have said that before I had bought it, I would not have. Thank gawd. xD

Just felt like posting more gory text.

The dark, reddish-black pool of blood... The scattered pieces of flesh...
Organs strewn across the floor like the blossoming of a grotesque flower...

The explosion that had torn through his body had been powerful.

The 9th Man's neck had been twisted at an odd angle.

Junpei suspected the detonation had thrown him against the wall.

Half of his face was crushed, and the other half was covered in blood.

Most of his abdomen had been emptied, either by the explosion, or by gravity.

He had landed on his back, and stark white ribs jutted up out of his chest,
like the legs of some sort of macabre crab.

Junpei felt something flip in his stomach.

Oh, and..

He stopped, just short of the threshold, and looked back, not knowing why.

Lying in the small hallway was a man's body--or at least, what was left of it.

He'd tried hard to avoid looking at the grisly scene, but it just wouldn't...
leave... his mind.

What had once been a man's internal organs now looked like so much vomit... As
though something had chewed up and spit out the better part of his torso. It
was hideous, but worse still, it was cruel.

It was hard to believe the thing on the floor had once been human... The black
pool of thick blood... The lumps of glistening flesh spread across floor... The
awkward, twisted tangle of shredded intestines... The head, wrenched to some
grotesque, unnatural position...

The man's glasses lay next to his head. The lenses were cracked, and the frame
bent and distorted.

And next to the glasses lay a bracelet, the number 9 still displayed on its
face.

Junpei: Hrg!

Suddenly, Junpei felt his stomach convulse, and a knot of muscle gripped his
throat.
He clapped his hands over his mouth, and ran to the 1st class cabin.

This is fun.

Get ready for the true ending. The final ending itself is a few more hours of reading.

I recommend getting all the bad endings if you haven't before getting the true ending, as there are some story elements that help flesh out the story in them.

It's not that, it's what you learn on the way there. For example, going through door 2 with Lotus and Seven will always lead you to a bad ending, but you learn a lot about their past through that path.

Hey guys, guess what?

They're making another one. (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/08/23/999-designers-working-on-3ds-and-vita-visual-novel-adventure/)

No idea if it's a sequel or not, but it's made by the same people. The fact that it's gonna be on both 3DS and Vita is interesting. 999 used the DS' dual screens to it's advantage by incorporating it into the story. With it being on two systems, they won't be able to do anything unique like that again, but it also means that no matter what handheld I get I'll be able to play it so no complaints.

If it doesn't get released here I'm importing a console just to play it.

Did you even beat 999 yet?

Also until then you could look for an English copy of Ever 17 since that was written by the same guy too.

GET HYPE. (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/08/25/gyokugen_dasshutsu_detailed)

Apparently it's not a sequel, but a spiritual successor. It involves the same escape-the-room kind of gameplay of 999 and even has a door with the number 9 in it.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe 999 and this new game are part of the same universe. They definitely look alike.

It has to be. Look at that teaser and tell me it won't be amazing. I can tell it's gonna be just as much as a mindfuck as 999.

Schrodinger's cat? Three Laws of Robotics? Tu fui, ego eris? What other seemingly unrelated stuff can they fit into the story?

Also 3D boobs.

Those two words.. Epiphany and Danger was it? Given he was in intense life or death danger maybe that's what drove him. A minute, maybe much, but I suppose it makes some sort of twisted sense,

Well I finally got around to starting the game last night.
So far, I love it.  got me thinking and kept me on my toes.

So far, I'm to the point where they're in the large hospital room, but Snake went missing and Clover ran after him.  rofl
It gets even better. Yes, that's possible.

So after some over viewing of my character through University and spending several hours of Mortal Kombat 9, I have finally gotten over the game not having a generic sappy happily ever after ending where much kissing would be involved, and therefore was able to fully grasp the story for the masterpiece that it is and thus give it maximum respect even with my hatred of survival horror stories
A masterpiece, truly a gift of the GODs and a story for the ages
I give it a 9.9/10
I -0.1 because the gameplay is still ass :P

Personally, this is the best DS game I've ever played. The only visual novel (IMO) that topped this, and BARELY is Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. And according to my research Proto_Blaze, the only thing I could come up with are screenshots and the name "Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die" I'll look up more in a couple weeks.
