I just realized we have a MKWii ISO up for download and I need some of the files from it so I decided to grab it. It's taken me 8 hours to get me half-way through a download that should have only taken me one or two. >.>
well it's mostly based on the seeds you have on that, once I got 4Gb in less than 2 hours, also having you internet brouser open slows it down sometimes, also some games speed torrents up, it worked for me with minecraft back when I could run it

If its a torrent from here, its probably a bad torrent (old). To get good fast torrents use ThePirateBay and get the torrent with the most seeds.

If you can get onto Demonoid, that's what I use. THey open registration once a month, if I"m not mistaken. If you can't get onto there, you can just use my account, I wouldn't mind. :3
Torrents, unlike Direct-downloads, download from other people as opposed to servers. A torrent's "Health" depends entirely on how many people are seeding it and the speed of their connections as well as yours. Find a torrent that has at least ~50 seeders to get a decent speed, and configure your client correctly to your connection.
Unfortunately some people don't believe in sharing, just downloading the file and then not uploading anything.. they would be leechers. If you get a torrent with lots of leechers, you're going to have a lot of trouble.
I almost always have my torrent client active... right now I'm getting about ~900KB/s on some anime I'm downloading. So you saying that torrents are "Slow" is bullshit. Also remember that due to the nature of torrents, you will also be uploading to other peers. Now you CAN limit the upload rate so you leave more bandwidth for Downloading.. but don't be a leecher. Just sayin'
