People hate it if it stayed "exactly" the same. If it's a case where the core gameplay is the same, but gameplay elements, presentation and controls get enhanced, then it's great. Why do you think the Mario games are soo successful?

Yeah, because you're f*cking with your original idea. People become fans of a franchise because they like the idea and want to see more of it, if you change it all of a sudden, then what's the point? If you're gonna change it's core, make a new IP.
