How do you define a generation of consoles?

Normally the newest console by the company I guess...
Gen 1: Nintendo Colour TV game + Atari
Gen 2: Game & Watch + Atari 2600/5200
Gen 3: NES + SG-1000
Gen 4: SNES + Genesis\Mega Drive
Gen 5: N64 + PS1 + Sega Saturn
Gen 6: NGC + Xbox + PS2 + Dreamcast
Gen 7: Wii (And all the DSs) + Xbox360 + PS3 (And all the PSPs)
Gen 8: WiiU (And 3DS) + PS4 (And PSVita) + XboxOne

Etc. c:

The 8th gen... eh.

Microsoft can't make a good console and happens to ruin things with every move they make.

Nintendo had the unfortunate luck of making a system based on outdated hardware which receives most of it's attention from first-party games exclusively. It'll be outclassed soon enough and it's long load times certainly never helped.

Sony hasn't shown us enough honestly. I'm impressed with what they're doing. The only thing I don't like is Sony's exclusives. I've never found them as anything to brag about and my reason for liking the PS4 is that it's the only 100% stable and up to date console so far.

Moving onto handhelds:

I love my 3DS. It carries much more potential than its predecessors did, which first-party developers exploit beautifully. The main issue with it is the fact that third-parties underestimate it and end up making their games a fraction of what they could've been.

The PS Vita is impressive. I haven't had much experience with the device but it carries more power than the 3DS and two touch screens. It shows you just how much hardware Sony can smash into one device. (oh and the games are fun too)

Yeah let's hope Microsoft drops out of the race for the 9th generation in a few years.

Sony will get greedy if that happens Wolfy.
Well... greedier.

I'd prefer if they just got their heads out their asses and improved their social skills. Cause if they drop out, not only will alot of probable good people be out of work, but then Sony may go unopposed, and we're all too familiar with what happens to companies who own a monopoly on the market...

A Video Game "Generation" is defined essentially by a gap, or a cycle between major system releases and Technological leaps.

Like the "16-bit Era", "3D Era", "HD Era" etc.
... the most appropriate name for this Gen is probably the Social Era. =w=

As long as they all end up as cool as Miiverse.

No, it's used for streaming PC games via a hand-held device, as well as playing Android based games, etcetera.

It's be cheaper to get one of those gamepad add-ons.

Are things like that and the Ouya really game consoles? I mean, technically they are, but they only play Android games, right? And all of these Android consoles will play the same games. Is there that much of a market for this when they all do basically the same thing? The Ouya doesn't even seem like its doing all that well.

God of War and Gears of War

Or are the actual video games not under the same system?

Do TVs count now? Cause they pretty much do everything the PS4 and Xbone do.

None of them can play Smash.

Can't we just group all these Android "consoles" into one category? It's not like they're wildly different from each other, nor are people out there making games specifically for them. They're just cheap little boxes that play cell phone games.

The Ouya can if you download an N64 emulator for it.
Then the Ouya is infinitely better than all of them.
