A news story over at Anime News Network reveals that three domains potentially referring to an as-of-yet unannounced Sonic the Hedgehog Movie have been registered. The domains include:
SonicTheHedgehog-Movie.com
SonicTheHedgehog-Movie.net
SonicTheHedgehogMovie.net
However they do not, yet direct anywhere.
Now, we've dealt with phony domain registrations before; you'll remember the SonicAdventure3.com domain scenario. But it's here where things get interesting: According to the Whois information on them, all three "Sonic the Hedgehog Movie" domains were registered by "SPD Domain Names Inc.", the official domain registrar of Sony Pictures. Sony Pictures has been responsible for a whole host of animated movies over the years, including Open Season, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Hotel Transylvania.
At Sonic Boom 2013, Takashi Iizuka did hint that Sonic would see a big screen debute some day since pitches for a Sonic movie were not unusual. But before we all get too excited, this doesn't mean a Sonic movie is definately coming, it might however mean that talks have started and this is a pre-emptive thing to protect the domain.
