Title: Spelunky
Post by: Elija2 on January 15, 2014, 10:19:00 AM
This game is really good. (http://spelunkyworld.com/)

It's basically a platformer roguelike. You go through randomly-generated areas trying to collect as much loot as possible and hopefully get to the end. There are also many secrets to discover on your way. But dying is very easy. In fact, you'll die a lot. But as you keep playing you'll get better and better until you become a Spelunky master! Or at least good enough to beat the game. If your friends have the game you can even compete against them in daily challenges to see who is the better Spelunkererererer...rer.

It's available on Steam, 360, PS3, and Vita. There's also a free version available for PC, but the new version has many new features including new areas, items, and graphics. I'd recommend at least playing the free version, but the paid version is definitely worth the money. I didn't really get into the game until I got the paid version. It really is that much better, although even I wouldn't buy it at the regular price of $15. I got it during the Steam Winter Sale for like $4 and it was worth every penny.

And it was made in Game Maker. You know, that amazing program by Yoyo Games that everyone shits on because they're all fucking stupid?

Not worth $15?

Sorry, but I'm not really into games where you "die a lot".

You really liked the Zero Escape games though.

At least play the free version. The game isn't unfairly hard, it just takes practice.

I think they're worth $15...

What kinda hard are we talking? Megaman? Castlevania?

Well the game's gotta be worth something if you made a topic for it...

Why didn't you do a review?

I didn't want to put in the time and effort to do a review. Plus there's really no need when there's a free version for everyone to try out.

Coulda gave us perspective on what we're getting into.

There are already dozens of reviews out for the game. I'd just be repeating what everyone else is already saying.

"Dying a lot" can be treated differently in many games.
Sometimes, dying is frustrating and halts your progression or reels back your progress significantly.

Sometimes, dying is in itself part of the game.
This can be done badly resulting in Trial and Error, or it can be done well and be rather rewarding and provide an accomplishing feeling for each time you progress a little bit further.

I have not played this game, so I can't say which of those it is, all I'm saying is that you shouldn't be put off by it. Dying a lot doesn't automatically mean you need to suffer through frustration or that you need to grind a lot, etc.

I have no idea what you're trying to say with that.. since I've never played it.

All I'm saying is to give everything a fair go.

Well when you die in Spelunky you do lose all your items and progress. There are shortcuts to other areas you can unlock, but your score won't be uploaded to the leaderboards if you use them. There is no grinding though. You can buy or find items in the levels but you don't need them to complete the game (they certainly help though). Even if you don't get far in the game it's still fun to play. Although it does suck to get near the end with a bunch of items only to die and lose it all.

What's the checkpoints like?

No checkpoints. You die, you go back to the beginning. It's not so bad since the game can be completed in around 20-30 minutes (in fact, there's an achievement for beating the game in under 8 minutes without shortcuts). Unless you're talking about the shortcuts. There are four main areas in the game, each with four levels. Once you reach the end of an area you'll meet the Tunnel Man who will ask you for something. It could be money or items. Do that three times and you'll unlock a shortcut to the next level.

Why have you not played the free version yet?

You still haven't beaten Jet Set Radio either. Why do you always pick the longer games to play first and leave the shorter games in your backlog?

It's not about length, it's about what engages me.

I dun like Jet Set Radio, that's not in my backlog, that's on the ragequit list.

It takes 10 minutes to download the free version and see if you like it or not.

I'm disappointed that you didn't enjoy Jet Set Radio but I can respect that it isn't your thing. You should play Jet Set Radio Future when if the HD remake comes out though.
