While I am referring to SIGN specifically, my statement applies to all other .hack// as well, though to a lesser degree.
SIGN was just a lot of people standing around talking, and a very angsty girl.

The .Hack franchise is about a dude who made an MMO to build his pseudo child, but the process he did to make that happen caused alot of shit to get real.
Sword Art Online follows the adventures of Kirito as he journeys through various MMOs doing stuff, stuff that SOMEHOW threaten life itself.
.hack// is a lot deeper than SAO but SAO has a lot more action. Unless we're talking about Legend of the Twilight.

SAO is more regular Shounen manga.
