Title: Thrifting
Post by: TheGameNinja on June 06, 2014, 09:32:32 AM
Does anyone else go thrifting? Thrift stores, pawn shops, flea markets, yard sales, and other places like that can sometimes have lots of video games and related things super cheap. They often won't know what thy have. Just yesterday I got a Wavebird GameCube controller, Castle of Illusion for Game Gear, and Day of the Tentacle all for just under $11. Day of the Tentacle was only $1, and it's a fairly old and uncommon PC game. It's a great way to boost your game collection without going broke and you might even find a hidden gem of something incredibly rare for pennies.

So if you've done it, got any good stories?

I'm not sure if this counts, but back in the day, many bazaars here in Europe sold pirated NES clones with lots of games, whenever I entered one of those markets, the first thing I saw were the huge stacks of Famicom looking cartridges that yelled "BUY ME, BUY ME!" and they were pretty cheap if I remember corectly (cheap compared to a legit copy of these games).
Although it they weren't legit I will always be grateful to them for bringing me into the world of gaming.

Today I bought a lot and all of it together was less than $30

PS1 ~ Tiny Toon Adventures: The Great Beanstalk, X-COM: UFO Defense, Rugrats: Search for Reptar, King of Fighters '99

PC ~ Star Wars: Battlefront, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Gold, Myst, Grand Theft Auto III, Nick-O-Matic Design Factory, RollerCoaster Tycoon: Loopy Landscapes, Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo, Putt-Putt Enters the Race, Putt-Putt Travels Through Time, Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-O-Rama, Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren't so Frightening, Pajama Sam's Sock Works, Pajama Sam's Lost & Found, Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, Freddi Fish 2: The Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse, Freddi Fish and Luther's Maze Madness, Spy Fox 2: "Some Assembly Required"

So yeah I hit something of a Humongous Entertainment mother lode. Would've been nice to get the original Pajama Sam, oh well. The RollerCoaster Tycoon expansion is nice since I just found the game itself the other day.

I found a Japanese Game Gear game, Puzzle Bobble, today in a pawn shop on the edge of town. This whole store was nothing but filthy tools and SO MANY GUNS. But they had a tiny section of games, mostly modern stuff. Behind the counter was a single shoebox with a handful of handheld games and PS1 memory cards. Never would have thought I'd find something like that there. I got that game, Super Columns (also Game Gear) and Slave Zero for the PC for $12. A little high for what I got, but the novelty of a Japanese Game Gear game makes up for it to me. Nice to know that system is region free.

Yesterday I picked up an Nintendo 64 at a local Goodwill. The Console with video and power cables was either $5.99 or $6.99. The controller was separate and it cost $4.99. They didn't sell any games for it, and I don't have games at home, so I can't test it. When I power it on, it does have a red light. I also read somewhere that the N64 has no video output if there is no game inserted. The guy at the Goodwill claims that it works. I plan on borrowing a cartridge from a relative before I actually invest in any games.
