Changing my name is for me cause I wanted it.
Being called Wind isn't any more offensive than being called any other nickname by an old friend.
Would you prefer it if people called you Haku?

But I would also prefer if my irl friends called me John, but that doesn't happen either.

It is a compliment, still would prefer if they used my name tho.
My family has a tradition, every member gets their name to be given to strangers and official stuff, and a "pet name" to be used by family and very close friends.
But because my mom has acquired soo many close friends, they call me by my pet name around their children, who then think it's ok to call me that too, so they say it around their friends, and the cycle continues
