Sonic Chronicles was terrible. However, the series has a ton of potential for an RPG still, especially with Sega owning Atlus. Sonic Adventure was even planned to be an RPG at some point.

Could we ever get one? How would Sega go about making it anyway?

Frontiers was pretty RPG-ish.
If they were to make another RPG, they could just build upon that.
