MOST abridged series are awful. But there are a handful that succeed in what they're supposed to accomplish. LittleKuriboh and TeamFourStar are the only two I follow regularly, though I hear Megami33's Sailor Moon Abridged is pretty good.

I've tossed around the thought of doing one myself...

OHHHH, them. I've never watched any of their stuff, but when they've collaborated with LittleKuriboh, they were pretty good.
