I think it just shows how much respect you have on the forums. Look at John Gills for an example.

You now have 1 karma. Karma basically shows if people like you or not. If you mess around, spam, or people don't like you, or you're just new here, you have low karma. You do things right, follow the rules, make people like you, people can raise your karma. I guess people don't like me.

When i first tried them, they were HARRDD, I've only defeated the D,P and Platinum Elite 4!

It took me about 2 of my pokemon to kill one of theirs.   
I was pretty much screwed....
