Mega Man Universe is the most recently announced Mega Man title in the franchise. Little is known about what type of game this will be, and so far only a teaser trailer has been released. The teaser is not necessarily indicative of the title's gameplay or visual style, but instead is meant to hint at the types of innovation the game will feature.

Unlike most recent Mega Man titles, which are developed by other teams or studios and oversaw by Keiji Inafune, Mega Man Universe's entire concept and design is being pioneered by Keiji Inafune himself. Statements about the game from Inafune and Capcom indicate that Mega Man Universe is meant to feel very nostalgic to classic Mega Man games, especially to people who grew up playing Mega Man. However, the game is also said to have a number of innovations, and that "imagination is the star of this game."

Current speculation is that the game will be something like Mega Man crossed with LittleBigPlanet. The trailer seems to indicate that Mega Man does not merely take new weapons, but can change his form entirely, including that of other characters, such as Ryu from Street Fighter and Arthur from Ghosts 'n Goblins. Given the large emphasis on imagination and customization, it is possible the game will be centered around a large scale content design system for creating stages and characters. Furthermore, at Comic-Con Keiji Inafune elaborated on the game's theme similarly, saying that everyone has their own idea about what a Mega Man game is, and wants to let players play the Mega Man game of their dreams. No features have yet been confirmed, however.

Updates from PAX indicate that there will be multiple playable characters, including Mega Man, Rockman (who retains his anime-ish appearance) and Bad Box Art Mega Man (US Edition Mega Man in Japan), who is styled after the Mega Man 1 box art. The gameplay trailer also hints at Ryu from Street Fighter being playable as well.

So far the game seems to feature a large amount of content from Mega Man 2, namely in types of enemies and stage graphics. The Mega Man 2 Robot Masters were also confirmed to be hidden in promotional artwork for the game, along with Cut Man, Arthur from Ghosts 'n Goblins and other characters. It is assumed, though not confirmed, that they will all be playable characters.
