I'd assume this is targeting the fighting game community, they are talking about it in regards to a tournament setting after all. But I'll get one. I couldn't stand using the Wiimote on Brawl and it'd be cheaper to buy one of these than 4 Pro controllers. Got plenty of Gamecube controllers lying around.

The D-Pad sucks, the C-Stick sucks, the button layout sucks, and it's missing a trigger. But I guess it's good for this one fighting game.

The fact that every other controller has them tells me that they are indeed very necessary.

But you're right, they're not absolutely necessary. All buttons aren't necessary. Everything should be motion controls like the Kinect or touchscreens like iPhones.

Wiimote+Nunchuk is great for some games, terrible for others.
