IMO, it sounds like they're trying too hard to be funny and random.

I have to agree, to much comedy and randomness caould actually make a game extremely boring, since there might not be anything to be expected, games need to be a little serious sometime, Ratchet'n Clank was serious, Psichonauts was serious, heck most of the games that made me laugh my ass of had serious parts in them
