Does anyone here realise how big the impact actually is in comparison with music and movies? :/

That is about 12'000 Downloads.
12'000 x 50 (Game Retails for 50) 600'000USD.

You also have to keep in mind that this ONLY on PirateBay and ONLY the current Downloads...
But also that not everyone would've bought the game...

That said, I'm pretty sure devs lose at least a million dollars because of piracy....
There is no alternate income like Theatre plays, TV plays or Radio plays...
There's only a hard copy.

Personally, I think the problem here is that as fun as the game looks, they wouldn't spend $60 on it. So maybe some of them just wanna try it out first.
But at the same time I cannot pretend that the blatant thieves are causing serious harm, but what can ya do about it? Rehabilitate the planet on the value of money?

A wise man once said that to beat pirates you just had to have the better deal.

...or, you know. Stop putting games on PC where they're so easy to steal.

Oh boi if we could just get rid of PC gaming...

But I think it's more that people don't think something is worth the asking price.

If its not worth it, dont get it.
Obviously, the game IS worth the asking price since you obviously want to play it if you're cracking it. :l

Maybe it's more like either:
A).This thing is asking $60.00, but I don't want to spend that much and end up not liking it, and there's no demo in sight, so I'm gonna pirate it to see if I really do like it. If I do, then I'll buy it, if I don't, then I'll save the $60.00.

B).I like this game, but there's not enough in it to warrant $60.00 IMO. So I'll pirate it now and do my second playthrough of it when it gets a pricedrop/sale to what I think it's really worth.

Sadly, I'm actually guilty of the B).

Then... just... wait... until... the pricedrop... :L
Not only that, but that is literally killing the middle man-dev.
If this goes on we'll literally only have AAA $60 Retail and $19.99 Digital...

Oh shit, i think Micheal Pachter said that such a thing would happen like two years ago...

lol when have gamers waited for anything these days? You see how much of a fit they show over delays. If they get the chance to play a game ASAP, they take it... no matter how buggy it ends up being...

Think of it this way. A game costs $60 when first released. Now keep in mind, it really only costs a PORTION of that to actually make the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason games costs so much is to compensate for the pirates.

Hakudamashi

I thought the price of a game is determined by the combination of the amount of money that must be paid to the developers, publishers, and the retailers upon each sale so that they get a fair share, and that "fair share" is determined by how much it costed to make the game in the first place, in addition to the making of the physical box, disc, and manual.

And the reason digital games are the same price as physical games is to not piss off retailers.

Is that right?

But what about a $60.00 digital sale?

I dont know

it (i guess) means that on PC the "console maker" part drops and on console the "retailer" part.
Then you can probably then split that up between Publisher and Developer.

Or if you're an indie (self-publishing) the publisher part goes to you, i guess.

With the PS4 and Wii U (who allow self-publishing) the publisher and retailer part drops as well.

Hakudamashi

As long as it means more money to the developer(s).

Kyo, your estimates are likely inaccurate.

Piracy is only widely done on PC nowadays. Unless you happen to be one lucky bastard, you can't pirate games for PS3 due to no jailbreak being available on the current versions. Piracy is generally MUCH less common on the 360 since you need hardware modifications which are quite the pain in the ass along with the 360 supporting less homebrew due to the decreased modding community. In that case, you can disregard most of what you see from the 360 and PS3 version torrents.
