My problem is that only the scanner function does not work.
It can print, copy, and presumably fax.
But you tell it to scan and it figuratively says "Up yours!"

HP sucks. They really do.

We bought an HP computer... lets see the problems
1. Slow.
2. When we sped it up it locked up a lot.
3. The hinge on the cover snapped (Its a laptop).
4. The CD-Rom broke.
5. The RAM we added gave it the Blue Screen of Death.
6. You can never rely on it for anything.

We bought 2 HP printers... after a year, they pretty much died, mixing the colors.
Our last printer went for about 3 years before that happened.
Our printer before that lasted like 5 or 6 years...

NEVER, BUY, HP, PRODUCTS!

...That...doesn't explain much.
We haven't had any problems with our HP stuff before, aside from us knocking one outta commission by bugging it down w/viruses.
We've had out current PC for almost 2 years with no (non-virus caused) problems and we have two working HP printers.
We've had the one of those for almost 5 years with absolutely no problems.
Our Dell was slower than our current computer (but that was fixed by adding an extra 2 GBs of ram), and we got sick of having to find Dell specific printer cartriges.

It would seem that you and I have gone through completely different experiences, Gleech.
However, I would still like to ask...
What do you recommend for my current scanner problem?
