I dunno, probably "You can't change the past so don't worry about it" or something along those lines.

Hakudamashi

I would've been content with that
But it wasn't his plan to change the past in the first place
And they didn't explain why or how he time travelled

Yes it was, he wanted to find out why his dad abandoned his family so he could try to stop him.

And how he time travelled isn't important.

Hakudamashi

Eh, no it wasn't
He just thought about it on the train cause his mom just passed away.

He didn't think to change it till some days after he time travelled.

Well yeah, he obviously didn't think it before he travelled back in time.

The point is that he tried to stop his dad from leaving his family but by trying to change the past he was essentially doing the same thing to his own family. That's why he let his dad go.

Hakudamashi

I got all that.

But like

He ended up right back where he started

I dunno, I feel a little dissatisfied...

That was the whole point! In the end he didn't want anything to change.

Hakudamashi

What I mean is like

Yes, I can totallly get behind the morals of "You can't change the past" or that it's better to have things remain as they are.

But my issue is that he didn't wish to change it in the first, he wasn't really unhappy or depressed or wished for change or anything like that, the time travel just happened.
He thought that maybe since he was back in time, he could try to get his dad to stay while he was there, but then the whole journey was just to make him want something he already had.
Then he just went back, with no struggle, he just did.

The whole thing felt pointless.

There wasn't even him trying to stay as a kid and trying to see if things would work out with Tomoko or whatever

I think it either needed a better intro, or a different moral.

He did want things to change at the beginning. Right after he saw his father he began wondering about why he left and how he could get him to stay. The whole manga is him trying to figure it out, but along the way he begins to forget about his future family. It isn't until he sees his father for the last time that he realizes that all of his actions will affect them, too. That's why he lets his dad and Tomoko go. The journey wasn't about him wanting something he already had, it was about him wanting something else and then realizing that what he really wants is what he already had.

It's not like nothing changed; he ended up with a better understanding of what his parents went through. He got closure (plus a book dedication).

It sounds like you wanted something to change, but that's not the point of the manga at all.

Hakudamashi

Well perhaps I should read the first chapter again, cause I don't remember him wanting to change things till after he time travelled.

Well yeah, I'm saying that after he saw his dad again he wanted to change things.

Also, did you finish reading Getenrou or what?

Hakudamashi

And that there is my problem
I'd rather he wanted things to change before the time travel, not after.

And yes, I finished Getenrou
One of the best things I've read.

Why? What's the difference?

And yes, I finished Getenrou
One of the best things I've read.

Really? Cause you said nothing about it.

Hakudamashi

Because he didn't care to change anything in the first place, then why'd he need to go through that?
He's like, right back where he started.

Yes
I said nothing cause
Man, where do I start?
