possibly, i've seen some cutscenes in grand theft auto vice city that some kind of singer requests petrol for a part of their drug.

maybe there wasn't energon and he just came up with the idea that all machines run from those fuel :P
The kid's 14, so I doubt he has any experience with Transformers besides the new movies, and they only mention energon in those, so I don't think he knew about it. I guess he just assumed that since they turned into cars they ran on gas. WATCH BEAST WARS, KID!! XD
