You can torrent pirated content, which is illegal. But torrenting in and of itself is not a crime. Saying torrents are illegal is like saying email is illegal. It's just a way of sending stuff through the internet.
And yeah, a direct download of pirated content is just as bad as torrenting the thing in the eyes of the law.

Besides, even if I did post it here, you'd need a unique CD key. Also, for me to give you my copy of a program, and then for you to download it would be illegal. Direct links and illegal torrent files are no different. The only main difference is you'll usually get much better download speeds with a torrent.
