I...umm...I actually don't know.
Sonic and Knuckles have brute strength and raw speed, but Mario and Luigi have teamwork which is unrivaled.

Sonic Could Win If He Was Versing Knuckles,Mario,AND Luigi!
It'd depend on who was making the battle, Sega, or nintendo... Otherwise, it'd be a tie.. mabye.
Sonic and Knux will most likely win against Mario Bros, but then again they can stand a chance because of the Mario Bros. abilities from Superstar Saga and Mario World. There's a flash movie about it with the exception of Sonic's partner being Shadow.
