I'd recommend you start with 4, 7 or 9 as your first, but if you really want 13, go ahead.

Square have been whoring it out lately.
Though 8 has now appeared on steam, I have heard good things about 8 but haven't played it myself. at least with it you miss the massive amounts of hype that build up 7 to be more than it actually is.

Or you could just buy 13 and be one of the few that like it : 3 *shot*

I wouldn't recommend 8 for someone's first for nothing else than Squall is too much of a downer... and the junction system is stupid.
