The only thing I was wrong about is that it started in Brawl, not Melee. Either way, Haku didn't know that the C-Stick did anything and that's what I was teasing him for.

I did what the tutorial told me to
Mash a direction with the analog stick and the attack button at the same time. It gave me good results, and I saw no need to use the c-stick.

But the C-Stick is much quicker and has less of a probability to screw up.
