Sakurai makes some strange decisions when it comes to his games...
And even still, i think people liked Adult Link in OoT more than they did Young Link since, you know, most of the story was with him in that game anyways.

People prefer DMC4 Dante over Donte, but Donte was in PSASBR

I'm sure it's less about preference and more about what's popular at the time.
So I guess it is soley because of OoT why Adult Link is a higher priority in Smash Bros. than Young Link...
