As far as I'm concerned, there is only one "clone" in the Super Smash bros. franchise, and that is Dr. Mario in Melee.

But if I can be serious for a moment.

I think a "clone character" in a fighting game is a character who is exactly the same as another. And when I mean exactly, I mean exactly. Like, I can play these 2 characters with the exact same mindset, exact same strategies, exact same habits, and nothing would change And if a change was made, it's completely negligible and means f*ck all like Ryu and Ken in the first Street Fighter.

Like, if the differences in the 2 characters is strictly cosmectic, and the exact same thing could've been accomplished if it was an alternate costume instead of wasting a character slot.

Like, Fox and Falco, their moves have different enough properties that you can't play Fox exactly like you play Falco, or you'll run into problems, the most obvious issue being that Fox's DAir multi hits while Falco's spikes, etc.

But Dr. Mario and Mario, IIRC, their differences were cosmectic, pills instead of fireballs and sh*t like that.

What do you guys classify as a "clone character" in fighting games?

Once I got the joke I smiled.

But seriously. People hate clones for a reason. Not because it's lazy but because it just feels wrong. Smash is one of those series where everyone has their own, "Well if I was the creator I'd do this" so when someone sees a slot occupied by the same character twice it's just easy to think about how many unique characters could have been on that slot instead.

Not only that but clones are just really unprofessional and, until I started taking Zoloft, they really set off my OCD. I actually avoided DBZ games that labelled Goku and his Super Saiyan forms as different characters on the character select screen for awhile. The same went foe Smash Bros but a lot less drastically. There was no reason Dr. Mario couldn't be a different outfit for Mario. Sure characters like Falco, Toon Link or Pichu wouldn't make sense as skins for their original counterparts but for cripes sake Nintendo could have put more thought into their movesets.

Well, from my experience in fighting games, I understand why "clone characters" exist. The idea of "I like this character's movepool, but ____________ annoy me"

And example that immediately comes to mind is Link and Toon Link in Brawl. I liked using Link in SSB and SSBM, but detest him in SSBB, I hate the Gale Boomerang, he moves like a truck with no power to show for it, and he just feels clunky. Thus I use Toon Link, he's Link if he didn't suck ass that's more agile, quicker, has the regular boomerang, and I like his multi-hitting UpB among other things, and is my 2nd Main. But at the same time, they can't just make Toon Link the real Link and drop the other clunky mess, cause there are dudes that like Link when he's heavy, and with the Gale Boomerang, and that his UpB is just one big massive blow.

So I get the purpose of "clone characters".

I still consider Roy a clone. Just because one of his attacks explode doesn't make him that different from Marth.

Hakudamashi

He was different enough for me
His multi-fire hitting UpB, his smashes hit harder, and because he was shorter, he had a smaller hitbox, making hm harder to hit, all at the cost of being slower and his sword is shorter

I hardly use Marth.

Young Link and Toon Link are almost exact clones of Link. I personally think they're more nimble, or fast even.
