Please no spoilers from NGE, I havent seen it and I dont know how much it impacts my viewing pleasure of the fourth movie.

Why does it look like they had a battle with the Angel that NERV was protecting and it got stabbed?

I know self-interpretation is a part of movies like Evangelion, just like it is part from Prometheus, but c'mon...
