Want to play Monster Hunter with friends but don't have a Wii U?

This is a dilemma a lot of my friends had before getting a Wii U to play MH3U-- the only Gen 3 Monster Hunter game in the west still playable online. but recently, I found a fairly painless way to fix the issue.. there are a few things required first.

- PPSSPP- A recent developer build is preferable at time of writing, make sure you and your friends use the same build. Found here.
PPSSPP Also requires VC runtimes found here.

- An ISO of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD that has been english patched. Why HD? because the original game doesn't work, and the HD version was just a PSP emulator run on the PS3. it works flawlessly on PPSSPP and has visuals on par to MH3U's Wii U port. You can find it on your own, but I could also just tell you where I found it.

- Decent internet, doesn't have to be amazing.

- For the host: Adhoc Server.

- Optional: Some kind of gamepad for your PC. Like a Dualshock 3/4 or Xbox 360 controller.

Credit to the guys over at Reddit who I can thank for teaching me how to do this. You can go ahead and read their instruction, because it's probably better than mine, but it's also a little outdated. (The reason why we're using a developer build is to overcome some of the issues outlined in that post)

It's worth noting that stability isn't guaranteed, but you knew that anyway.

The first step is deciding who will be host. Once you've decided that, you need to get their IP address, this is important in getting online.
The host will then need to run the Adhoc server.

The next step is setting up the emulator. You need to boot up the emulator and the game at least once, I'd recommend going through and making your character and then going around and talking to all the village people. When asked if you're new to the game and need a tutorial, say NO. Otherwise you'll be stuck doing a whole bunch of boring weapon tutorials that are better suited to learning during progression. (MH3U did away with these)

After saving the game, look for your memstick folder. This for some people is simply in the PPSSPP directory. For others, the directory is My Documents>PPSSPP instead. When in there, go to the SYSTEM folder and edit "PPSSPP.ini" with Notepad.
There are a couple of things you need to do here. First is to write "True" after the "EnableWlan" Line, this will allow you to use the online functionality. After that, (Even if you are host) put the host's IP address after "proAdhocServer" and then change your MAC address either to fit your PC's MAC address, or just to a completely random string of six two-digit numbers. It's important that all players involved choose a DIFFERENT MAC address. Don't forget to add a nickname as well.

For Example:

[Network]
EnableWlan = True
[SystemParam]
PSPModel = 1
PSPFirmwareVersion = 150
NickName = Tanassy
proAdhocServer = XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
MacAddress = 00:16:FE:01:54:79

After that, save the file and go into your Emulator.

Options should be fine by default, so don't mess around with them too much. But I'd recommend going through your options and checking to make sure WLAN is enabled.. after that, you'll need to configure your controls.

For this I'll assume you're using either a 360-style controller or a Dualshock controller, connected to your PC. By default, the controls will be mapped to their respective PSP buttons.. A/Cross to Cross, B/Circle to Circle, etc. The game however, being a PSP gamne, doesn't use the right analog stick- so the camera is controlled by the D-Pad, and that is awkward to say the least. What we're going to do ios change the controls to fit the Wii U version. You'll notice that each button has multiple tabs, allowing you to fit more than one control on your PC to each of the PSP's buttons. This is good.. because you want to Keep the D-pad as the D-pad.. however, you also want to go through and add the inputs for up, left, down and right on the right analog stick, repectively to the D-pad inputs. This way, you can navigate menus with the D-pad and still control the camera with the right analog stick, which is far more intuitive.

You may have noticed in the Reddit post there was an "alternative speed" section. Well, in theory.. we don't have to worry about that anymore because we're using a newer build. But it's worth keeping in mind if you ever run into trouble!

Now you're basically ready to get in game. As long as the server host has the server up, all players should simply be able to go into the "Online Guild Hall" in game and start questing together as normal!

As you can see from my DXtory, the game runs at 30 Frames per second, so it shouldn't be hard to get max speed even on a low-end machine. And as you can also see, the game scales extremely well and looks great in HD!

Happy hunting! If you have any issues, just post them here and I'll do my best to help out. To my friends on here, if you want to play with me, just hit me up on Skype~ ^^

I'm tired so if I fucked anything up in this topic forgive me.

I can't recall which emulator I used, but I once tried Mega Man: Powered Up and it lagged to unplayability.

Maybe you should give it a shot again on this one, it might work for you.

I've always said that PPSSPP was an amazing emulator, but this just blew my mind.

Tanassy

It is. Major props to the devs.. those who also worked on Dolphin, so you know they're great at what they do!

No, you don't.

Download the MH3U Demo. Works perfectly without circle pad pro.

I don't have MH3U, only MH3 on Wii.

This is only free because you're pirating the game. Plus once MH4U comes out there will be no reason to go back to the older games.
