The Entire Fate Series is Fucked

So in my recent overlord of Saber hype I took it upon myself to learn more about her series, her personality and her backstory. Since Fate/Stay Night began as a Visual Novel I figured I'd just read a summary of the canological story and call it a day, but what I found was...less than stellar to say the least.

First of all the story is dumb. Not just one, but all of them. Yeah sure some are less stupid and convoluted than others but the problems that plague each story seem to be consistent among the three.

For those unaware Fate/Stay Night has three major routes: "Fate", "Unlimited Blade Works" and "Heaven's Feel". Each of these follow the protagonist Shiro as he meet and fucks his way through three women, Saber, Rin and Sakura respectively. There's also a shit ton of spin-offs, movies and prequels that make keeping track of the entire thing confusing as fuck.

The Fate/Stay Night anime I've put off follows the Fate route while the upcoming one follows the Unlimited Blade Works Route:

Along with this, the Heaven's Feel route is apparently getting a movie.

Well you probably think that's all fine and dandy, I mean, three girls, three routes, three adaptations, right?...Except it's not that simple as Heaven's Feel (which features Shirou fucking and hooking up with Sakura) apparently happens after the true endings to the previous routes. Meaning that no matter which girl Shirou takes in the first part of the game he cheats on them to fuck Sakura instead and apparently all three girls are still loyal to him.

If that wasn't fucked enough for you let's introduce Archer, the main antagonist(?) of Unlimited Blade Works:

Spoiler: He's Fate's equivalent to Trunks. Apparently man-whore Shirou was able to come over to another timeline and turn black somehow. So now the plot is even more asinine because we have an entire alternate universe that just gets swept under the rug.

So what IS the story about again?

Well to summarize it, when a "hero" dies I guess they can form a contract on their death bed to participate in the Holy Grail War as a servant. Servant gets RPG style classes, stats and skills which is why Saber is referred to as such. Her name isn't actually Saber, it's Altria Pendragon. Name sound familiar? Maybe you're more familiar with Arthur Pendragon, otherwise known as King Arthur.

No, I'm not making this shit up. This cute, aryan anime girl is King Arthur. The entire premise for FSN was seeing what would happen if King Arthur was brought to present day.

Either way each Servant requires a contract with a Master in order to stay in the war. Depending on the Servant's Independent Action Skill Rating they can survive longer without their original master and even forge contracts with new ones. The winner on the war, and thus the Holy Grail, is the final duo of Master and Servant left standing by the war's end. The Holy Grail can apparently grant wishes, which is why people fight in the war in the first place.

This, honestly, has a lot of potential to be a cool story. I mean they even bring in other characters like Gilgamesh, Hercules, Medusa, Frankenstien and even Jack the Ripper, but they fuck it up by putting the most unlikable asshole in the spotlight.

See Shirou (and subsequently the female leads) suffers from as really bad case of "Visual Novel Main Character Syndrome", where despite being a moron every girl in the game HAS to want on his dick. Carnival Phantasm even has an entire episode dedicated to Shirou attempting to two time every girl that likes him and (thankfully) he gets found out and beaten (hopefully to death).

As much as I hate the dude, though, my opinion is based solely off what I've read on both the wiki and in the chunks of the VN I've seen on YouTube. Most people agree with me, however, in that Shirou is a fucking unlikable twat (with Heaven's Feel being a notable exception).

In closing I'd like to say that I know this really isn't an argument and, yes, a lot of things were left out like the ending of Unlimited Blade Works where Rin hooks up with Shirou, contracts Saber as her servant and has a harem between the three of them. I'm just really tired of looking at this fucking post and I want to do something else with my time.

Though I will say, Saber and the parody works suddenly feel like the only redeemable things the series has going for it anymore.

I've seen the Unlimited Blade Works movie and it was pretty bad...

Then you might want to catch the UBW anime and Heaven's Feel movie coming out. Tell me how they are because I sure as hell won't be watching them.

You should check out Fate/Zero, if you haven't already.
Has a lot of Sabre.

Is very, very good.

I've seen clips, but I haven't actually watched the anime. Maybe I'll look into it after Clannad. I mean, if you liked it it can't be as bad as the VN. That and Shirou only shows up at the end which means no man-whoring.
