Coming this winter in North America

Now that I've got that out of the way, time for a stealth Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Appreciation Thread.
For whatever reason a few of you think that I hate Pokemon. I don't! I bought Pokemon X, didn't I? I guess I'm just not a big fan of the turn-based battles in the main Pokemon games. That said, I fucking love Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Maybe it's mostly just the Mystery Dungeon aspects of the games that I enjoy, but pair it up with the Pokemon world and it becomes even better!

I've only played Explorers of Time but while I was expecting a mediocre Pokemon spinoff I ended up with a surprisingly fun game with pleasant graphics a shockingly great story. Seriously, that game probably has the best story out of any Pokemon game ever. And what other game actually lets you play as a Pokemon? Okay, a bunch of them but Mystery Dungeon actually gave them all their own unique personalities instead of just having them repeat their names over and over again. Gates to Infinity later came out on the 3DS but unfortunately it wasn't as good as the previous games so I avoided it. Etrian Mystery Dungeon recently came out too and I considered getting it despite not being a big fan of the Etrian Odyssey games, but when this new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game was announced I said "Screw that, I'll just wait for the Pokemon game!"

Now who knows, maybe this game will turn out bad like the last one, but I won't lose hope! Besides, if it does stink then I'll at least have Etrian Mystery Dungeon to fall back on (and that's an Atlus game so you know it'll be on sale for super cheap in no time).

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone else here played a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game and what your thoughts are about it.

Hakudamashi

I played the GBA one and got horribly bored out of my fucking mind
They're pretty tho.

Only played Blue Rescue Team. That game is mostly known for it's music.

I love how everyone who's played Explorers of Time, Darkness or The Sky loves the series while everyone who has only played Red and Blue Rescue Team are eh on it.

...and no one has played Gates to Infinity.

The Explorers Of trilogy isn't a sequel to the Rescue Team games so you guys should play one of them if you get the chance.

I think they still count as sequels even though they're not continuations of the same story.

And I kinda doubt that the Explorers trilogy was that big of an improvement over the Rescue Team games. Some people just aren't into these sorts of dungeon crawling games.

Anyway, I hope Super Mystery Dungeon has proper online multiplayer. Hey, maybe this will be the game that jkid finally plays with me!

If I recall all the games have had online multiplayer in some form.

I want to be able to make my own dungeons and set missions up in them.

I don't think so. In Explorers you could take on someone's rescue mission by typing in an insanely long password but there was no true multiplayer mode.

And making your own dungeons would be neat, but the dungeons in these games are too simple so you wouldn't really be able to make anything interesting.

Couldn't you do that in the Rescue Rangers games too?

Well the real fun would be placing traps and Pokemon in each room a create fun little arenas to fight in. Not to mention SMD could easily add new features to flesh out the function.

I think there was a dungeon in the Explorers games where you would get to a certain floor and you would always find a TM (I think) hidden behind a locked door which made you go after the key. You could easily make puzzles requiring you to find keys to advance.

I know nothing about those games.

I guess, but that still wouldn't make custom dungeons better than the randomly-generated ones, especially since you have an infinite supply of randomly-generated dungeons but you'd have to manually create/download custom dungeons.

I disagree. I'd like to think that dungeons with thought put behind them would be fun in their own right in this type of game, especially once you've gotten bored of the random generator and need something a bit more creative to play.

But you can't really be creative in these games. Even if they gave you more objects to work with, it would be hard to make unique dungeons that are distinct from the randomly-generated ones.

jkid101094

Clearly you don't have a good enough imagination.

I have a good imagination, it's just that these games do not give me the tools to express my imagination in an interesting way.

jkid101094

And yet I still disagree. I really think we could have something great with the feature.
