It's always a possibility. They should take memorable moments from Sonic 1 - 3 and continue the action from there since this is suppose to be the actual continuation to the Sonic saga after Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Maybe it's connecting the time lines somehow? And you never know. Just because they showed Metal doesn't mean Mecha might still not make an appearance. Maybe they plan on mind fucking us and make them the same damned robot.
