Knuckles Chaotix. That explains a FUCKLOAD of a lot. in fact, Sonic Heroes is more of a sequel to that game than Sonic CD or Adventure 2 because Metal Sonic's final form is VERY similar to Metal Mettalix in KC. And Sonic Heroes gameplay is based off of Knuckles' Chaotix anyways.

Unless we have the Cannon order really screwed up and it's:

S1 > S2 > S3 > S&K > S4 > SCD > KC, etc.

I see your point but this isn't a squeal to a game. This isn't Sonic 5 but Sonic 4: Episode 2. It's a lot less likely for the game's second chapter would be set before it's first, unless they set it up all prequel flashback style.

As for the rest of the series, since Tails was in 3 and S4 came after S3&K according to SEGA themselves I highly doubt that the order from S1 to S&K is wrong. Tails being out of Sonic CD is no indication that it came before 2 because neither Amy, nor Metal Sonic are in the later games and since Metal is (apparently) in KC I doubt Eggman would have replaced him by S3.

There might not even be an episode 3. If there is I'd imagine it being some sort of "classic timeline finale"
