They should be used for both. There's not much point getting them if you're not a completionist, but if they hold some nice reward, then bam, you have a meatier game.

I don't like how they've been replacing Chaos Emeralds, though. It made sense in Colors and Generations, but what is EP 2's excuse?

In Colors, the red rings were used to unlock the Gameland stages and once you completed them all, you got Super Sonic.
That was an extremely nice reward, indeed.

In Generations, they were used to get upgraded skills. Also a very nice reward.

Seeing that they got you a reward in the last two games - then by all means, let them be used to obtain a reward.

I must say, the Trailer didn't even show off the games true graphical qualities. Despite being shot off-screen, this game looks GORGEOUS!

\ sega representative fails to do a jump because of jump-physics

...and so it was developed for phones. i thought it looks like a phone game.

Is a timer really needed if you are continuing to move forward? Unless the player can change the speed.

it might actually be for time trials of some sort. They might make it be speed boost or those stunt rings that makes sonic go faster.
